If you have never heard of Damascus Steel, we won't blame you. After all, the science of ancient alloys is rarely associated with the craft beer world. But when offering you a super potent Double Mash Imperial Barley Wine, we wanted it to have a name that indicated equal strength and solidity, hence Damascus Steel - the forged steel used for the blades of swords previously smithed in the Middle East. Such blades were reputed to be tough, resistant to shattering, and capable of being honed to a sharp, resilient edge. The reputation and history of Damascus Steel has given rise to many legends, such as the ability to cut through a rifle barrel or to cut a hair falling across the blade. For centuries, swords made of Damascus Steel were both feared and sought after as they were in a league of their own when it came to blade weapons. Mysteriously the craftsmanship of manufacturing Damascus Steel slipped into oblivion almost 300 years ago. And although many have tried to forge a modern version of the magical steel, no-one has succeeded in finding the exact technique and recipe.
